UVa Study Abroad

J-Term 2022

London: The Theatrical City
(ENGL 3990; 3 credits)
December 29, 2021 – January 13, 2022

Undergraduate students from any major are encouraged to apply for participation in this study-abroad program in London. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, students will earn three credits for ENGL 3990, which carries full credit toward the English major at UVA.

In this program you will attend 8-10 plays in 13 days, drawn from a wide array of the various kinds of performance available on the London stage, from classic to contemporary works, from the Royal Shakespeare Company to pub theatre. In the past, students have seen the Royal Shakespeare Company in Measure for Measure, the London premiere of Hamilton, Keira Knightley's London stage debut in a modern version of Molière's The Misanthrope, the London premiere of Jackie Sibblies Drury’s Pulitzer Prize winning Fairview, a highly experimental piece staged in an old factory by The Shunt Collective, and John Guare's Six Degrees of Separation at the Old Vic Theater.

You will also meet London theater professionals and learn from them how they go about translating dramatic texts into performance, addressing questions of interpretation and dramaturgy.
