How to Declare
The College of Arts and Sciences has moved their major/minor declaration process online.
To declare your major, take the following steps:
1. Submit your major declaration using the Declare a Major or Minor form on the College website. Instructions for logging in and accessing the form can be found at the above link. Be sure to select the correct major so that I receive your declaration.
Before declaring a major concentration in Modern & Global Studies, Literary Prose Writing, or Poetry Writing, students must first apply and be admitted to the program. See each program's webpage for instructions on how to apply. The major concentration in Medieval and Renaissance Studies may be declared without an application.
Once you have submitted your declaration, you can expect an email response from me in 5 business days during the Fall/Spring semester and within 10 business days at any other time.
Having trouble using the form? Email CollegeForms@virginia.edu with as much information as possible about your specific problem.
Haven’t heard back from me? Thank you for your patience! If your declaration is still in progress but you haven’t received an email from me in the time windows mentioned above, feel free to email Victoria Baena (English DUP) at …, including your full name, computing ID, and the major/minor you are trying to declare.
2. The DUP will approve your form (getting back to you with corrections, if necessary) and assign you to a major advisor. When selecting an advisor, the DUP is happy to consider emailed requests specifying a particular faculty member or area of interest (e.g., modern poetry, gender studies, Shakespeare, teaching).
3. Meet or talk with the DUP or your English faculty advisor to discuss your proposed course of study.
Students declaring the minor should use the same form, there is a field on the form to indicate that it is a minor declaration instead. The requirements for the English minor are listed here.
